Bigton Water Mains Renewal
Project Overview
Scottish Water is investing £1.6 million in Shetland’s south mainland to provide customers with an improved service and ensure we can continue to supply clear, fresh drinking water into the future.
The project is being delivered by one of Scottish Water’s alliance partners Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA) and is due to get underway at the beginning of December 2021. It is expected to take around a year to complete the improvement work.

Investing in your water network
The £1.6m project will enable us to provide a better service to customers in the area.
What We are Doing
The work will involve replacing approximately 9km of water main between Geosetter, Bigton and Maywick.
To allow us to carry the work out safely there will be a requirement to have traffic management in place. This may include the use of temporary traffic lights and some access and parking restrictions.
Our onsite team will speak to anyone impacted by any restrictions to access. Please take care and follow any signs put in place.
Access for emergency vehicles will always be maintained and pedestrian access will not be affected.
During the work, we will need to turn off some customers’ water supply for a short time. Before we do, we will send you further information at least 48 hours in advance, detailing the dates and times that your supply will be affected and what to do.
You may experience a change in water pressure and/or discoloured water. If this happens, turn on the cold water tap in your kitchen and let the water flow slowly until it runs clear.
