Overview
Scottish Water is investing £2.5 million to take care of Dalwhinnie’s water supply and ensure the provision of clean, safe and fresh tasting water for the future.The project, which takes into account housing growth and high seasonal demand from tourism, includes:
- Replacing the existing Water Treatment Works (WTW) with a plant which has the capacity to produce up to 200,000 litres of drinking water a day
- Installing a new tank which would provide up to 24 hours of drinking water storage capacity
- Installing four new boreholes to feed the new WTW

Work is well advanced on site to prepare for the delivery of Dalwhinnie's new Water Treatment Works (WTW). The WTW buildings have been prepared at our contractor RSE's specialised manufacturing facilities in Muir of Ord in advance of installation, testing and commissioning.
Following investigation works and assessment of the new boreholes, we are proposing to change the design of the new WTW to include two new raw water storage tanks which will ensure greater security of supply for the community. A new planning application will be submitted to reflect this proposed change.
The new Water Treatment Works is expected to be completed by summer 2022. A new Clear Water Tank, which will store drinking water before it is distributed to customers, will follow later once the necessary land has been purchased. This is currently the subject of a Compulsory Purchase Order, further details of which are outlined below.

The Scottish Water (Dalwhinnie Clear Water Tank) Compulsory Purchase Order 2021 was made on 1 July 2021. The Compulsory Purchase Order is required for the purpose of a Clear Water Tank and its associated infrastructure, power cables, telemetry and an access road thereto from the A889.

Any objections to the Compulsory Purchase Order must be made in writing stating the title of the Order and the grounds of objection and addressed to The Scottish Ministers c/o The Scottish Government, Water Industry Division, 3F South, Victoria Quay, Edinburgh EH6 6QQ by 6 August 2021. Alternatively, an objection to the Order may be addressed electronically to the Scottish Government’s Email: compulsorypo@gov.scot stating the title of the Order and the grounds of objection.
